Home and property insurance in Uganda

Home insurance is optional in Uganda. According to IRA, property insurance covers buildings and contents against risks such as fire or theft, and may add equipment breakdown, debris removal and some water damage. Once you sign the discharge, the insurer must pay within 10 working days for claims up to UGX 10 million.
What to compare
- Building cover at rebuilding cost, and contents with a list of valuables.
- Perils covered: fire, lightning, storm, burglary, water damage.
- Portable items away from home (often an add-on).
- The excess, and security conditions.
- You cannot insure the same property twice to be paid twice (IRA FAQ).
Claim deadlines
From IRA's Guide to Insurance Claims:
