How long does an insurer have to pay a claim in Uganda?

Deadline calculator

Short answerChecked 28 October 2026
Under IRA's claims service standards, once the insurer has your signed discharge voucher it must pay within 10 working days for claims up to UGX 10 million, 15 working days up to UGX 50 million and 20 working days above (or on the reinsurers' cash call if sooner). It must acknowledge a claim within 3 working days and make an offer or refuse within 5 working days of the final report. Motor third-party claims: 60 days from notification.

Pick a date

Working days are counted Monday to Friday from the day after the date you enter. These are IRA's service standards (“indicative timelines” in its guide), not a court deadline; your policy can set its own conditions for reporting a claim.

Source: IRA, A Guide to Insurance Claims, "The Claims Process and Service Standards for Insurers". IRA calls them indicative timelines; the time you have to report a claim is set by your policy conditions.

For motor third-party claims, the Third Party Risks Regulations (reg. 3) give the insurer 60 days from notification, or 30 days after a valid dispute is resolved.

Worked example

The insurer receives your signed discharge voucher on Monday 2 November 2026. Counting Monday to Friday from the next day:

Amount on the voucherWorking daysPay by
UGX 8,000,00010Monday 16 November 2026
UGX 30,000,00015Monday 23 November 2026
Public holidays push the date by one working day each; the calculator lets you add them. Indicative: the policy and IRA's Complaints Bureau decide a dispute.

If the deadline passes

Write to the insurer with the date of your voucher and the deadline, then complain to IRA's Complaints Bureau — free, online — which can order payment: see how to complain to IRA. IRA's guide lists undue delay after a signed discharge voucher among the grounds for a complaint (claims guide).
