To drive from Uganda into Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and 9 other countries, get a COMESA yellow card from your insurer. It covers third-party injury, death and property damage abroad, with optional medical cover for driver and passengers. Uganda Re is the national bureau; verify a card free by dialling *284*8070#.
What it covers
The yellow card is accepted in 13 countries: Burundi, DR Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. It covers bodily injury, death and property damage to third parties; emergency medical treatment for the driver and passengers is optional.
In Uganda
Uganda Re is the national bureau and launched a free USSD check that works without internet: *284*8070# (Airtel, MTN, Africell). Border officers are trained to use it (Uganda Re).
After an accident abroad, tell the local police and that country's national bureau at once, and keep the original card and the police and medical reports.
